TRUST AFFAIRS

Sir, —If “Ratepayer’ 1 ’ is to be judged by his letter of August 21, then he appears to have given much time, yes, and thought too —though perhaps not taste —to the many points raised in his communication. Some were good. So good, in fact, that it is a pity they were sullied by his remaining observations. The average Ashburtonian is fair-minded, therefore it is unnecessary to take up cudgels on behalf of the Town Clerk. Permit me to remark though, on the time that we all know he has cheerfully given to patriotic and other public-spirited efforts. Mr Editor, if he got any reward for "helK ing the Trust in its infant days, well and good. It is churlish to moan about it. I do not wish to'deride “Ratepayer’s” use of his privilege to ask questions through your columns.- May I observe though, that this-can be done without personal allushjgs,.which are sometimes cheap. Anyone who has your correspondent’s undoubted ability to put his fingers Og telling points should have appealed to the people not only by medium of your paper, but through the poll that w r as held to elect Trust members. Those men who were elected commanded the confidence of a majority. We should be thankful that people are big enough to comb forward and offer their services on any public body—undeterred at the prospect of anonymous brickbats that they know await them.

Whitanagemot.
