WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

LAURISTON MEETING There was a record attendance of members at the August meeting of the Lauriston Women’s Institute. The president, Mrs J. R. Mounsey, presided. To commemorate the Canterbury Centennial, members took part in a tree-planting ceremony at the school grounds, when Mesdames J. R. Mounsey, G. Scarth and V. Boag donated and planted trees. The motto for the month was: “Men make houses, women make homes,” while the roll call was “A country I should like to visit and why.” The correspondence included invitations to attend the birthday party celebrations of the Lyndhurst Women’s Institute and the Mitcham-Rokeby W.D.F.F. Two new members, Mesdames A. Gordon and G. Douglas, were welcomed.

Members handed in gifts for the leper appeal, also peggy squares for the making of a quilt for the Red Cross Society.

A request was also made for members to bring articles of clothing to the next meeting for the benefit of displaced persons. Final arrangements were made for the institute’s birthday party, which is to take the form of a flag 500 evening and dance. • A bright and most interesting talk on “Life and conditions on the Chatham Islands” was given by Miss B. Plight (Ashburton), who recently spent some months at the hospital at Waitangi as a member of the staff. On the motion of the president, Miss Plight was accorded a vote of appreciation for her most enjoyable talk.

Competitions resulted: —Bottle of chow-chow, Mrs R. Bebbington 1, Mrs F. E. Amos 2; three onions, Mrs Y. Boag 1, Mrs A. Goodwin 2, Mrs J. Irwin 3; bulbs in fibre, Mrs V. Boag 1, Mrs C.
