SAILORS’ DAY

MEETING OF W.C.T.U. Seamen’s or Sailors’ Day was held at the meeting of the Ashburton Women’s Christian Temperance Union in the Baring Square schoolroom. Sister Mildred presided. The meeting opened with a hymn and prayer. Several letters of acknowledgment were read;

Sympathy was passed to Mr J. T. Pratley in the sudden loss of a brother. Members stood in silence, and the president led in prayer. Mrs Harwood reported on the South Cantei’bury District executive meeting held in Timaru, at which Mrs Densom presided and gave a vei-y helpful address on encouragement.

Arrangements were made for the convention, which is to be held in Christchurch on September 12, 13 and 14. '

The Rev. Mr Chambers delivered an address on the Temperance Y work, over which he had been president for several years.

Mrs Harwood was appointed a dele gate from Ashburton to the conven tion. 1

The temperance fact was sent in by Mrs W. H. Robinson. “Alcohol is a swell poison—it swells the head, and it swells the death-rate.’’ Mrs Haycock gave a very convincing and interesting address on seamen and the splendid work that is carried on at Sailors’ Rests in the different ports. Mrs Holmes expressed thanks to Mrs Haycock.

Several useful gifts, and the collection were received, and they will be forwarded to the Timaru Sailors’ Rest.

The meeting closed with a hymn, and Mrs Haycock led in prayer, and pronounced th Benediction.
