LOOKING BACK

iJIFTY YEARS SYNE (Prom the “Guardian,” Aug. 21, 1900). Communion Cups —At the monthly sacramental service held at the Baring Square Wesleyan Church on Sunday evening, separate Communion cups were used for the first time, and the innovation did not not mar in any way the solemnity of the service. The cups are in the Shape of small wine glasses, and the new order of things seems to give general satisfaction as far as the above congregation is concerned.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

(From the “Guardian,” Aug. 21, 1925). Address at Allenton —There was an attendance of between 30 and 40 people at the Allenton School last evening, when Mrs W. R. Don delivered an address dealing with the liquor traffic in New Zealand to-day and the effects of Prohibition in America. Mr R. Houston presided, and items were given by Mesdames W. Thomas and Bilby (New Brighton) and Mr W. Corbett. Mrs Don was accorded a hearty vote of thanks at the conclusion of her address. —Support for Proposal: The Ashburton branch of the Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Union last evening agreed to the proposal that the industrial dispute with the employers be referred to a conciliation council.
