SECRETARIES CONFER

NEWS OF THE TURF

SEVERAL RECOMMENDATIONS Secretaries of New Zealand trotting clubs decided at their second conference in Christchurch last evening to seek an amendment to the rules which would make it necessary for a person withdrawing a horse from a meeting of two days or more to state which day or race the withdrawal referred to. Delegates said that the terms “withdraw” and “scratch” were used loosely by many owners and trainers, and in the case of two-day meetings they sometimes failed to stipulate on which day or race their hOrse was being withdrawn. With the introduction of the doubles totalisator this could have some unfortunate consequences. The conference decided to seek a uniform nomination form and authorised the chairman (Mr H. E. Goggin) and Mr J. B. Nicoll (Ashburton) to produce a specimen form for approval. Delegates also agreed to see that the confirmation of nominations was carried out within the time limit and that the rule be enforced. The next conference will be held at Auckland in 1952.
