FREIGHT RATES

AUCKLAND TO SOUTH ISLAND INCREASE OF 10/- A TON (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Freight rates for all cargo carried on coastal vessels, operating between Auckland and ports on the east coast of the South Island, will be increased by 10s a ton after the end of this month, says the New Zealand Shipowners’ Federa- , tion, in an announcement made today. Approval of the increase was granted because of heavy losses sustained in the trade between Auckland and the South Island, consequent on the long periods the vessels are immobilised without earnings, due to extended periods in port, and to other increasing operating costs. “The necessity for this further increase is regretted, as high freights are not in the best interests of the shipping industry,” says the statement. “The increase is an inevitable consequence of the existing conditions.”
