PREFABRICATED HOUSES

SMALL NUMBER TO BE IMPORTED . (s __ (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 18. The Government has decided to issue licences for the importation of a representative range of prefabricated houses. This was announced to-day by the Minister of Customs (Mr C. M. Bowden), who said the intention was to allow importers to bring in under licence and erect small numbers of these houses. Their quality, cost and general suitability would be carefully studied by the Government and the question of providing for importation on a larger scale would then be considered further. The houses would naturally be required to comply in all respects with New Zealand’s health and building requirements. Mr Bowden said there appeared to be a considerable difference of opinion regarding the part which the importation .of prefabricated houses could play in overcoming the current housing shortage, and the course now proposed by the Government seemed to offer a reasonable opportunity for substantiation of various claims which had been made. Licences would be issued only for houses which seemed likely to be suitable for New Zealand and which were available from sterling or soft currency countries.
