INSURANCE SCHEME
AUSTRALIAN PP.OPOSAL (Rec. 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Commonwealth has proposed a comprehensive insurance scheme to States to finance the cost of hospital treatment. The scheme will provide about £7,000,000 for hospitals from insurance fees, plus about £7,500,000 from the Commonwealth subsidy. The State authorities have agreed to refer the scheme back to their Cabinets, and State Governments will discuss it again with the Commonwealth at the Premier’s conference late this month. The proposed scheme provides that people insure against sickness with organisations similar to the metropolitan hospital fund of New South Wales, to which people make a small weekly contribution for hospital benefits.
