ASHBURTON AND METHVEN Although beaten in the football, the Ashburton High School teams yesterday secured the honours against the Methven District High School teams by winning both basketball matches, one decisively. All matches were played at Ashburton. In the football, the Methven first fifteen played a team comprising mostly fourth grade players from the Ashburton High School. The game was very even throughout, with s,ome bright football featured. Both sets of backs were inclined to< stand flat-footed, but some bright solo runs were witnessed. The Methven backs showed better cotnbination in the second half, and this was a decisive factor in the win. Ten minutes before full time the score was .1.1-6 in favour of Methven, but the Ashburton forwards, in a combined rush, carried play deep into Methven territory, for one of the backs*to score near the posts, but the kick missed. Ashburton pressed hard, but were unable to penetrate, and Methven held on to a slender lead to win by 11 points to 9. , Mr R. Bryce was referee. The Methven “A” basketball team were outclassed by the Ashburton “B" team, which showed better combination and more accurate passing to win by 21 goals to 3. Methven “B” were beaten by the Ashburton “C” team in a low-scoring game by 7 goals to 3.
