UP FOR SALE

BOTHERSOME BIRTHDAY GIFT BOMBAY. A diamond-studded gold replica of the Asoka Pillar, which Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru declined to accept as a birthday gift, is for sale. This expensive little work of art was presented to Nehru on November 14 last year, by the Bombay Congress Committee. Nehru declined to take it on the plea that it would add to his burden. “I can’t afford to keep this costly thing safely. Please do not send it, but sell it and send the proceeds to the Prime Minister’s Charity Funds,” he told the committee. The Congress has not yet found a buyer for the £4OOO gold and diamond piece. -—(Reuter).
