BOWLING

ASHBURTON CLUB CLOSING DAY ON SATURDAY * The committee of the Ashburton Bowling Club, at a meeting held last evening, over which the president, Mr R. L, Lindsay, presided, decided to close the season on Saturday next. Considerable discussion took place concerning the ed that it was impossible to secure nearly sufficient labour to carry out the proposed turfing of the top green, and this scheme was abandoned. Instead it is proposed to discuss the scarifying of ..the green with two experts from Christchurch at the- weekend. Mr H. N l . Armstrong reported on ex tensive inquiries he had made concerning the proposed method, which had produced good results on several greens in Christchurch. A report was received from the research centre at Palmerston North on a sample of soil submitted, and this recommended the use of the soil for top-dressing. The question of the presentation of cups and certifificates wae. left in the hands of the-president.
