YEARLING SALES
NEWS OF THE TtfRF
RECORD ACHIEVED ON FIRST DAY SYDNEY, April 11. The yearling sales which opened today set an Australian and New Zealand record for first-day sales. One hundred and fifty-four lots were sold for 117,715gn5, an average of 764gns, a record achieved largely because of the extraordinary prices paid for offerings from the Kia Ora Stud, Scone. This stud offered 15 yearlings—all from Midstream _ which realised 40,850gn5, an average of 2723gn5. The well-known trainer Frank Dalton, paid top price of 5100gns for a bay colt by Midstream from Suffragette. The champion American jockey, Johnny Longden, who is visiting Australia as the guest of the Melbourne Racing Club, paid 4000gns for a bay filly by midstream from Tittle Tattle. Longden, also bought a Delville WoodCountess filly for 950gns. Longden said he was operating for an American buyer, and would leave the yearlings in Australia until they had developed. Three Genetout colts brought 9200 gns. They were from Anbeau 2900gns. Port Dombey 3foogns, and Pen Name 3200gns.
