TRAGIC FIRE

Father and Sons Perish (Rec. 12 Noon) SYDNEY, This Day. A young returned soldier and his two baby sons were burnt to (death when fire destroyed their weatherboard cottage in North Manly late last night. Rescuers, including men from a bus depot, were driven back by dense smoke and fierce flames which rushed through the building. The victims were: — Albert Charles Bassett (28), a carpenter, and his sons aged two years and ,three months respectively. Mrs Bassett was at the local picture theatre when the fire occurred, and was not told of the deaths until early to-day. She collapsed when she returned home to find firemen searching the ruins. People who saw the fire soon after it started said that Bassett made frantic efforts to escape, and struggled to an open window before falling back into the flames. The cottage, which was owned by the Manly Council, had been condemned.
