EAST INDONESIA

CONFERENCE FAILS TO AGREE (Rec. 11 a.m.) JAKARTA, April 10. In a joint statement to-night, issued by the leaders of delegations from East Indonesia, the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of the United States of Indonesia, it \Vas announced that the three conferring parties had agreed that: “In view of difficulties which have arisen of late, questions concerning the State of East Indonesia will be settled on the basis of the firmest possible unity of the Indonesian nation.” The statement added that there was no intention on the part of the Republic of Indonesia to incorporate any territory into its jurisdiction. The Premier, Dr. Hatta, in a broadcast, admitted the existence of “a fierce struggle between federalism and unitarism in East Indonesia,” but denied that the Azis coup at Macassar recently was in any way connected with it. Dr. Hatta also denied that the Republic of Indonesia wants to incorporate the State of East Indonesia. He hinted at the possibility that “a third Power is using the Azis revolt for undermining our unity to pursue its own aims,” but ho did not say which Power he meant.
