AUCKLAND ZOO
FRESH ANIMALS ARRIVE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 10. Seven animals for the Auckland Zoo were among the most satisfied passengers in the Huddart Parker liner Wanganella, which arrived in Auckland this afternoon from Sydney. They were a lion, two baboons, three gazelles and a deer from the Taronga Park Zoo, Sydney. The baboons are a gift to the Auckland zoo. Although the view from their cramped quarters in No. 2 hold did not extend beyond a few expensive motorcars, the animals found amjple compensation for their close confinement. They were fed regularly, the lion on meat, the baboons on fruit and bread, and the gazelles and deer on carrots and lucerne hay. Mr M. Lyon, a ship’s carpenter, who had the responsibility of feeding and looking after the animals, found them good sailoys and amenable to most sailing conditions. If anything, the lion was the most philosophical about the voyage, regarding the whole event with indifference except for meals.
