LABOUR REPRESENTATION COMMITTEE
NEW OFFICERSSELECTED Thirty delegates were present at the annua) meeting of the Ashburton Lm hour Representation Committee, held on Saturday evening. Mr G. Turton presided. Mr Turton, in reviewing the year's activities said that the year had been a very eventful one as far as the Labour movement was concerned. The defeat of the’ Labour Government at the last election meant a temporary set-back to some of their hopes ’ and ideals, but he felt sure that the people would again be prepared to support the policy of Labour. He made special mention of the work of the candidate, Mr Rose, and. of the wonderful efforts made by the Orari braneh, to whom the executive extended their thanks and congratulations. The honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr G. Glassey, was congratulated on his presentation of the financial statement and balance-sheet for the year and was thanked for his services to the committee. Mr and Mrs Glassey were accorded a vote of thanks for the use of their garden for the first garden party, which had proVed a great success. Officers elected were: President, Mr G. Glassey; vice-president, Mr P. Hitehings; hon. secretary anrl treasu-. rer, Mr G. Turton; executive, Messrs H. G. Ayers, W. H. Tutty, P. Jenkins, F. X. McDonnell, J. Bradley, J. Hounsome, G. Marshall and G v Adamson; divisional area representatives, Messrs G. Glassey and P. Jenkins; delegate to national conference, Mr Glassey. :> Mr Glassey thanked members for the honour conferred on him, and referred to the sterling work which had been done by the retiring president, Mr Turton, who was accorded a vote of thanks. It was agreed that Mr J. H. Ward, who is leaving the district, be thanked for his services to the movement during past years. Successful Garden Party The" first venture of its kind held by the Ashburton branch of the Labour party, a garden party dnd bazaar, was held on the property of Mr G. Glassey and Mrs Glassey, Tinwald, on Saturday. A large number of persons were present. A profit of £IOO was made. A fancy-dress parade, a baby show, games, ,competitions and stalls comprised part of the day’s activities. The Ashburton Silver Band provided music. The president of the Labour Representation Committee, Mr G. Turton,' ;thanked the bandsmen, the organisers of the party, and the host and hostess for their assistance. Results of . competitions were as follows: Baby Show: Under Gmths, Tony McManus 1; 6-l2mt,hs, Robin Campbell 1, Shirley Withell and Jillian (equal) 2; 12-lSmths. Raymond Beaven I. Fancy dress : Best girl. Colleen Lane (Queen of Hearts); best boy, Alan Fechney (Father Christmas); pair, Mary and Mervyn Glassey; most original, Joy Morgan.
