ECONOMIC AID TO ASIA
COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES CANBERRA, April H. The Australian Minister of External Affairs (Mr P. C. Spender) announced in Port Moresby that the members of the British Commonwealth had agreed that the first meeting of the Consultative Committee on Economic Aid to South-east Asia should be held in Sydney on May 15. The committee Avas established at the Ceylon conference last January on proposals sponsored by Australia, NeAV Zealand and Ceylon. The New Zealand delegation at the conference in May would be led by the Minister of External Affairs (Mr F. W. Doidge) and the United Kingdom delegation by the Paymaster-Gen-eral (Lord Macdonald). It was expected that other countries would also be represented on a ministerial level. The Consultative Committee would discuss recommendations from the participating governments for means _ of providing economic aid and technical assistance to South and South-east Asian areas. They would then consider the question of approaching governments outside the Commonwealth which are interested in the area Avith a view to enlisting their collaboration.
