THEFT OF PACKETS

POSTMAN SENT TO PRISON / (P.A.) ' AUCKLAND, March 7. > Desmond O’Grady, aged 23, postman at New Lynn, who was to have been married on Saturday, will have to postpone his wedding. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day he Avas sent to prison on one of six charges of stealing postal packets containing sums totalling £6 and a pair of sheets valued at £2 2s 6d He pleaded guilty. Defence counsel said that O’Grady assisted the police in their inquiries, and desired to make -full restitution. The Magistrate (Mr F. McCarthy) said there could be only one form of punishment for such offences—gaol. He sentenced O’Grady on one charge to tAVO months’ imprisonment Avith hard labour.
