LOOKING BACK

/FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 9, 1900). Ashburton Swimming Club The final meeting of the Ashburton Swimming Club was held last evening in the rooms of Messrs McConnell and Compton. Present—Messrs P. Orr (captain), W. W. McKinney (secretary), G. Jesson (treasurer), H. Braddell and C. B. Willis. The secretary’s resignation was received with regret. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £3 2s, leaving the club in a good position. It was decided to ask the New Zealand Swimming Association to arrange for school children in Ashburton district who could swim 50 yards to receive a certificate to that effect.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the' “Guardian,” Mar. 9, 1925). Athletic- Club’s Scheme—The Ashburton Amateur Athletic Club’s scheme to give 16 free boxing lessons to schoolboys has been completed, and an instructor, Mr C. Stock, has been engaged.. Health restrictions following the infantile paralysis disease, however, have prevented the boys getting together for lessons, and the club can therefore do nothing till the restrictions are abolished. By this means the club hopes to bring to the fore some very promising talent. — Matriculation Pass: Miss Phyllis Taylor, a pupil of the Ashburton High School, has been notified that she gained a partial pass in Matriculation.
