NEWS OF THE TURF

MID-WEEK RACING

EXPLANATION BY MR HOLLAND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 3. No general restoration of mid-week racing throughout the Dominion has been made. Approval has been granted for mid-week racing only to meet the two special cases of Wellington and Christchurch, as recommended by the Royal Commission on Gaming and Racing, said the Prime Minister (Mr S. G. Holland) to-day. The subject had been discussed yesterday by a Government caucus which had requested him to make clear to the public that reversion to mid-week racing applied only to Wellington and Christchurch, Mr Holland said. Other centres which held three-day meetings had one day’s racing on a public holiday and were thus not involved in the change. The decision, for Christchurch, was intended to restore Grand National week in August and Carnival week in November, which had existed for a great many years, and had been taken with a view to curtailing the recent practice of extending racing over six consecutive Saturdays in both August and November. In Wellington the July meeting would be completed in two Saturdays and on one week day instead of on three consecutive Saturdays.
