VISA REFUSED

DR. HEWLETT’S VISIT TO AMERICA (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 3. The United States State Department refused to allow the Dean of Canterbury, Dr. Hewlett Johnson, to visit the United States. The Department instructed the American Embassy in London to reject his application for a visa following an invitation to attend the world congress of the Partisans of Peace. State Department to-day refused to allow a European delegation, including the Dean of Canterbury, to visit the United States to petition Congress to end the East-West arms race. The 12-man delegation is headed by Pablo Picasso, the noted Spanish artist The State Department, in a formal statement giving reasons for refusing entry, said: “The twelve delegates, on the basis of available information, are either known Communists or fellow travellers, and are therefore subject to exclusion from the United States under the immigration laws.”
