SHARK CAUGHT BY HAND
DRAGGED ON TO BEACH BY FISHERMEN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 16. Two fishermen, with their bare hands, caught an active eight-foot shark at Eastbourne this morning. The shark put up a struggle but was landed before it could attack its captors. It was of the grey nurse variety and measured three feet in girth. ' “We did it for a bit of fun,” said one of the men to-day. The two fishermen are cousins, Messrs J. Delabarco and M. Delabarco, of Eastbourne. They saw the shark off the rocks at the north end of the Eastbourne beach. Swimming south along the beach, the shark came into just more than a foot of water. Mr J. Delabarco then grabbed its tail and, assisted by his cousin, he dragged the shark quickly up the beach out of the water. “It struggled and thrashed about trying to get at us, but we had it out before it did any damage. “It had really sharp teeth in the jaw, eight inches from top to bottom. We sometimes catch similar sharks out m Cook Strait, but they are not often seen in the harbour.”
