Americans are visiting other countries in greater numbers than ever before. The U.S. Department of State reports that during the first nine months of 1949, a total or 227,731 passports were issued, almost as many as were issued during the entire year of 1948. On the basis of these figures, the Department’s passport division estimates that a record totai of 250,000 passports will be issued to American travellers by the end of 1749. For the three-month period, July through September, a total of 55,036 passports were issued.' During the period, 40,716 Americans received passports for travel in Western Eur- 1 ope. Other areas of the world ana the number of passports issued include: Latin America, 6903; Near East 2184; Far East, 1763; Eastern Europe, 1605; Africa, 1186; Australia ana New Zealand, 664; and Canada and Newfoundland, 15. A total of 36,861 Americans travelled abroad by ship, while 17,834 went by plane. Passport figures, it: is pointed out, do not indicate the total number of American citizens travelling abrftad.
