CHEQUE FRAUDS INCREASE

JOHANNESBURG 'Bank officials throughout South Africa have been advised to intensify •their scrutiny of cheques because of an increase in cheque frauds' in recent months. A senior banking official said that women figured prominently in this type of fraud. Choosing a long bank queue, they took advantage; of the tellers being busy and tendered their cheques with a heartiness that allayed suspicion. The official said the psychological effect of a woman on some tellers was amazing. While tellers would pass on for verification the smallest cheque presented by a strange man, many paid out without hesitation on a woman’s smile. —Reuter.
