South Africa fought back grandlyto-day to make the finish ’ a tense struggle. All out in the second innings for 333, South Africa set Australia S 6 runs to win in 105 minutes. The Australians got these runs for the loss of two wickets, with 27 minutes left for play. The Springbok captain, Dudley Nourse, batted with courage and skill against a fiery attack to score 114 before he was trapped leg-before by McCook On a fast pitch, Miller and Lindwall made the ball rise sharply, and Nourse was struck on a hand and in the abdomen by deliveries from Miller. In getting his century to-day Nourse equalled Bruce Mitchell’s South African record of eight test centuries. Nourse and Tayfield added GG in a seventh-wicket stand. Tayfield and Mann were associated in a merry eighth-wicket partnership and made the Australian bowling look cheap. They saved an innings defeat and added 100 Tuns in GG minutes. The South African innings closed for 333—the highest against the Australians on this tour. The Australians had plenty of time to win. The ' openers, Morris and Moroney, were slow, but Miller and Harvey scored at a fast rate, the latter two batsmen being not out when the game ended.
