The weather in Ashburton to-day was again pleasantly warm, although' there was a brief shower this morning. A shower last night produced 10 points. Recordings at 9 o’clock this morning were: Maximum temperature 75 degrees, minimum 49.6 degrees; earth 62.5 degrees, barometer 29.64 inches. The sun shone for 9.4 hours yesterday.

MONTH AT MT V SOMERS At Mount Somers *rain fell on 14 clays during December, totalling 5.02 inches, compared with .97 in December, 1948. A maximum of 140 points fell on the 17th. The year’s total was 40.17 inches, compared with 41.47 in 1948. The highest was in January (518 points) and the lowest in September (102 points). The average for the last 10 years is 43.40 inches, the greatest being 59.47 inches in 1945, and the lowest 37.98 inches in 1942. FAIR TO FINE AND WARM (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The forecast for ilie east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru to 5 p.m; to-morrow is as follows: Winds turning to northerly or northwesterly to-morrow and freshening inland. Fair to fine. Cold night, mild day temperatures. Further outlook: Fair to fine and warm. SUN, MOON AND TIDES Sun rose to-day, 5.04 a.m.; sets, 8.7 p.m. Sun rises to-morrow, 5.05 a.m.; sets, 5.7 p.m. Last Quarter, January 11, 10.31 p.m. New Moon, January 20. 6.31 p.m. First Quarter.
