TWO FIRE ALARMS
COUNTY AND BOROUGH UNITS CALLED ON THE DAMAGE NEGLIGIBLE Two fires occurred in the Ashburton district yesterday, j The first and more serious outbreak was on the area on Chatmos Road, in the Winsiow-Windermere district, known as O’Grady’s plantation. Corse at the bottom of the old plantation which was burned out and has recently been re-planted caught fire. At about 1 o’clock the County Council was communicated with and the firefighting plant was promptly despatched to the scene. It was found that farmers in the district had the blaze under control, and the Council’s plant completed the task- of extinguishing it, without material damage having resulted. At approximately 5.30 p.m. the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a fire in the river-bed at a spot known as the Allenton dump, well up the Alford Forest Road. Only one unit was called upon and again the fire was put out without any damage having been done.
