WORLD’S AIR TRAFFIC LAST YEAR WASHINGTON, Jail. 2. Twenty-five million people throughout the world had travelled by scheduled airlines in 1949, said Sir William Hildred, Director-General of the International Transport Association. This was* a record that considerably exceeded that of 1945. More than three out of five air travellers had flown on American airlines. Sir William Hildred said that, the number of scheduled- Avorld flights 'amounted to one in every five seconds of the year. The average daily number of passengers was about 70,000. Airlines had made about. 11,000 flights across the Atlantic and carried nearly 300,000 passengers between Europe and Nbrth America. American domestic and international airlines estimated the year’s net operating income at 44,830,248 dollars, which was nearly three times that, of 1945. Passenger travel had increased by more than 11 per cent, air freight had increased by nearly 35 per cent., and mail had increased by about 13 per cent.
