REQUEST TO HUNGARY

TO CLOSE CONSULATES IN AMERICA (Roc. 9.55) BUDAPEST, Jan. 3. The United States has asked Hungary to close her only two consulates in the United States—at New York and Cleveland—not later than January 15. An official of the American Legation here said that the American Note containing the request was delivered to the Hungarian Foreign .Ministry by the United States envoy (Mr Nathaniel p. Davis) to-day. The Note referred to Hungary’s rejection of America’s request for permission to visit Robert Vogeler, an American citizen who was arrested on November IS and charged with espionage and Sabotage. The Note accused Hungary of failing to live up to her treaty obligations. It said that no American officials had been allowed to visit Mr Vogeler since his arrest, and relations between the two countries might deteriorate. There was no shred of evidence to substantiate the charges against Mr Vogeler or Israel Jacobson, an American-Jewish relief official in Budapest’, who was recently expelled after being accused of spying.
