AUSTRALIA'S GOOD LEAD

TEST CRICKET IN SOUTH AFRICA HARVEY’S BRILLIANT ITS (Rec. 10.20) CAPETOWN, Jan. 2. Australia closed its first innings in the second test with 526 for seven wickets, having added 214 runs today in fast time for the loss of three wickets. This is the highest test score ever made by an Australian team in South Africa.

Neil Harvey, a 21-year-old lefthander, made a brilliant 178—his bigbest Test score. It was his third century in Tests and his fourth on the present tour. He batted for just under four hours, hitting 16 fours. After luncheon he thrashed the South African bowling in a dazzling display. South Africa at stumps with 169 for three wickets still needed 207 runs to avert a follow-on.

' When the game was resumed today Harvey, gaily hitting fours, raced away from dwadling Loxton, who was content to handpick singles. Harvey reached his century in 149 minutes. The Harvey-Loxton partnership was worth 140 for the fifth wicket. Harvey and McCool then added 86 for the sixth wicket.

Undaunted by their huge task Rowan and Wynne began South Africa’s innings fairly briskly but Wynne was caught in slips when the pair had made 33. Rowan went on to make 67. Nourse was batting well at stumps. He hit 13 off one over from lan Johnson.
