“I am here merely on holiday on the way to Australia and have nothing to say,” was a message Lord Nuffield sent to the press on his arrival at Wellington in the Rangitiki to-day. Lord Nuffield, who was met by Sir Charles Norwood and other friends, was clad in a yachting jacket and grey slacks and looked remarkably fit despite his 73 years. He won the deck tennis championship on the voyage.
The Ashburton office of Dalgety and Company Ltd. has been advised by the General Manager that Sir Patrick Duff, K.C.8., K.C.V.0., joined the Board of Directors on New Year’s Day. Sir Patrick Duff was High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand from 1945 until recently. He served in the Great War 1914-18, being twice Mentioned in Despatches. Since his arrival at Auckland by air from Wellington on Friday night, the Minister of External Affairs (the Hon. F. W. Doidge) has been confined to bed with a severe attack of influenza. His condition showed an improvement yesterday and he was probably allowed up for the first time to-day. It is expected that he will be fit enough to leave by air on Thursday on the first stage of the journey to Colombo to attend the meeting of the British Commonwealth Foreign Ministers.
