ETNA ERUPTS
NEW MOUTHS BLOWN
HAMLET IN DANGER (N.Z.P. A.—Copyright) (Rec. 9.# a.m.) ROME, Dec, 2. Mount Etna, Europe’s largest volcano, erupted before dawn today, and lava belched from three new mouths blown near the central crater as smoke and ashes poured forth. ,
The hamlet of Maletto is in the path of the lava, but experts think that for the present the inhabitants are safe. There is no indication yet, however, whether the volcano has spent its force or is building up to new and fiercer eruptions.
Dust enshrouded the 10,000-feet high peak this morning, and settled on Catania, 11 miles away. In- February ,1947, Etna burst into a series of eruptions that rolled lava at the rate of 30 feet a minute down its sides, damaging crops and cultivated slopes. The volcano’s most violent eruptions were before the Christian era.
