FIRE DESTROYS CHURCH

CANTERBURY LANDMARK f (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. One of Canterbury’s oldest landmarks was removed with the destruction by lire of the Anglican Church of St. Mark, in Opawa. The interior of the church, built in 1865, was reduced to charred ruins. The most touching feature of the fire is that the burning of the church means for many people the severance of one of the few remaining links with Christchurch’s early days. and pioneer families.

Relics from the church’s interesting history were damaged beyond repair. The property was insured foiatabßut £2600.
