RECORD EXPORTS IN MAY
FAVOURABLE TRADE BALANCE (P.A.) . WELLINGTON, Dec. 2. Statistics given' by the Minister of Customs (the Rt. Hon. W. Nash) today show that during May, 1949, the value of exported goods amounted to £20,526,000, the highest monthly value yet recorded. The value of imported goods during that month amounted to £10,495,000, leaving a favourable balance in visible transactions of £10,031,000 for May. The statistics also covered the period from the beginning of the year to May 31. The total value of exports for those five months amounted to £79,687,000 and imports to £43,726,000. “The resultant favourable trade.balance (in visible items) for the periodunder review—£3s,962,ooo —is greatly in excess of any figures recorded for any similar trading period in the history of the country,” said Mr Nash. “The figure is more than double the favourable trade balances recorded in 1947 and 1948.” , The high level of export values over the first five months of 1949 were to a large extent attributable to prices paid overseas, for exports of wool and frozen meat, said Mr Nash. These two items accounted for more than half tho value of all exports over the period in question.
