VALUE OF REFERENDUM QUESTIONED

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dee. 1. “I think it will he generally conceded that a licensing poll every three years is no longer justified,” said Mr Percy Coyle, director of the National Council of the Licensed Trade of New Zealand to-day. “The people continue to express themselves emphatically against Prohibition.

“With the Licensing Control Commission invested with such wide powers the public is assured of even more satisfactory administration of the licensing laws. Further referenda on the question of Continuance or Prohibition are surely not now considered necessary. I do not know of any other place in the world licensing referenda are held every three years. The vote for Continuance on Wednesday was the greatest vote yet recorded.”
