COUNTY CENTRES

TENNIS CLUB PRACTICE

Friendly games were played by members o£ the Willowby Tennis Club, on Saturday. Having a bye in the country competition, members took the opportunity of some practice. The winner of the singles matches was W. Chalmers with P. Mackay runnerup. Afternoon tea was a welcome interlude on a very warm day. , Interest in Croquet Every Saturday, members of the Willowby Croquet Club gather at their temporary lawn, kindly lent by the School Committee, in the schoolgrounds. Friendly games are played and afternoon tea enoyed by all. Such keen interest is taken by members that many are to be seen on weeknights practising on the lawns.

Methodist Stamp Club

There were 28 present at the Methodist Stamp Club meeting in the Sunday School Hall on Saturday. A total of 2635 stamps was contributed, Murray Whiting doing best with 498 which entitled him to a special prize. Miss M. M. Lill gave a short talk on the youth representatives in the Solomon Islands.’ Many gifts of handkerchiefs, Christmas cards, and S.S. tickets were received to he sent to Sister Ruth Hilder in the Maori Mission Field. .Items were given by Glenys Cunningham, Betty Shaw, Clive Johnston, Eleanor Bartram, Stewart Sharp, Beverley Thomas, Margaret Sharp, Noeline Cunningham, Ilene Williams, Patricia Sloane, Gwynwetli Williams and the-Junior Choir.

Methodist W.M.U.

The Methodist Women’s Missionary Union meeting was held at tlie home of Mrs J. H. Ellis, at Hinds. Mrs J. C. A. Williams presided. The Dominion president’s monthly letter and the Kurahuna quarterly reports were read. Represenatives to the District Council meeting to be held in Timaru on November 29 were appointed. They are Mrs Williams, Miss H. Lill, Mesdames Bartram, Whiting and Taylor. A short talk was given by Mrs H. Oakley on “Reminiscences of pioneering days in Willowby and surrounding districts.”

HINDS PLUNKET SOCIETY

SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY

A very successful garden party was held recently at the home of Mrs G. Farrell by the Hinds branch of the Plunket Society. Stall conveners were Mesdanies S. McKeage, L. Noble, C. Dell and MeQuilkin; and the funds of the branch will benefit by the function to the amount of £32.

Mrs R. Donaldson,-- president, welcomed members and guests. Mrs Charles, president of the Ashburton branch, spoke of the aims of the society, and declared the party open.

Winners of competitions conducted during the afternoon were:—Croquet, Mesdanies Lane and Charles; golf, Mesdames Lane and Cocks.
