FIRST ROUND COMPLETED

Positions of senior teams in the Ashburton Cricket Association’s competition at the close of play on Saturday are given below. The day’s play completed the first round. The table ip as follows :

The peculiar feature of the above is that Kia Ora’s only win was against Fairfield, the latter’s only loss. The'Old Boys v. Fairfield game was played on the Oval at the Domain, and resulted in a win for Fairfield by one wicket and three runs (104 for 9 to 101). The game was marked by good fielding, but also by an amount of erratic bowling of which advantage was not always taken. Principal scorers for the winners were: C. Robertson 55 (including seven fours and one six), T. Blain 15, D. Smith 11, and for the loners G. Weir 15, H. Cullen 15, A. Burrows 14 and I. Griffiths 13. The most successful bowlers were C. Price six for 18, D. M. Smith two for IS for Fairfield, and Griffiths six for 37, and N. Bell two for eight for Old Boys. Umpires were Messrs W. Moody and E. Bell.

• Kia Ora played Technical Old Boys on the latter’s ground, and were decisively defeated, by 137 to 64. The winning team’s beet scores were M. Wall 22, A. Porter 20, Jones 20 not out, R. Sheehan 21, W. Dee 15 and D. Guthrie 1 2.' Technical had passed Kia Ora (who batted first) with only three wickets clown. Batting for Kia Ora S. McElhinpey took 115 minutes to compile a painstaking 25, the only batsman to reach double figures being T. Cleary 10: Bowling for Technical M. Wall took four for 17, C. Keen three for 18, A.. Porter two for 20, while for Kia Ora G. Gambles secured two for 26 and G. McCormick one for 24, with an exhibition of steady consistent trundling. The game was remarkable for the number of catches taken, no chances being dropped. Umpires were Messrs G. W. Murray and W. Barrett.

Junior Games

Technical 0.8. played Tekau on the latter’s ground, Tekau batting first for 66 (W. Ferris IS, C. Jordan 10). Bowling for Technical, L. Cornwall tooly five for 23, and E. Fahey three for 2S. Technical’s first innings saw a score of 126 run up, including E. Flaherty 44 not out, L. Cornwall 16 (four fours), E. Fahey 19, K. Dolby 11, and J. Forsyth 10. Bowling for Tekau, A. Sparrow took six for 37 and J. O’Grady two for 17. Tekau’s second strike brought an addition of SI, with A. Hayston 16, W. Ferris 13, A. Hanan 11, A. Sparrow 10, W. Young 10 not out. Fahey took five for 31, Cornwall three' for 43,. B ; Sutherland two for 3. Technical lost 'only two wickets to make the required total, Sparrow, for Tekau, taking both for 16 runs. Tec finical thus secured an outright win.

High School played Technical High School, High School taking first stand at the wickets find making 79-, C. Smith’s 34, being the best score. For Technical, W. Ashworth secured six for 25 and C. Henrie four for 47. Technical replied with 62, Ashworth 16 and L. Carroll 11 being the only two to reach double figures. C. Smith took five for 15 and P. Moodie three for 21. High School’s second innings produced 92 for five declared (G. Willoughby 38, Smith 27 not out, Evans 13, with two sixes and a single). The successful bowlers were Hemming two for 26 and Ashworth two for 22. Technical’s second strike resulted in 81 runs, with B. Lloyd 17 and W. Ashworth 13 showing up prominently. Bowling* for High, N. Evans took five for 21 and Whitehead four for 6. High School thus secured outright win.

Third Grade

Two hat-tricks in one match were features of the third-grade matches. The successful bowlers were L. Johns (Technical School), who secured the astonishing figures of seven wickets for nine runs off 11 overs in High School’s first innings, while J. Gluyas (High School) captured six Technical first-innings wickets for 16 runs off 12 overs. Gluyas took the last five wickets for no runs, doing the hat-trick in one over and taking two consecutive wickets in the next.

Technical School won outright by four runs. High School scored 42 and 74 (Ng 24,), while Technical, scored 28 (Williams 15 not out) and 120 (S. Garforth 20, N. Scott 16). L. Johns took seven for nine (including the hat-trick) and six for 24, while for High School, J. Gluyas took six for 16 (including the hat-trick). Technical Old Boys 'defeated Old Bo3 r s by 23 runs in the first innings. Old Boys scored 100 (P. Hamel 23, N. Burrows 17) and 41 for six (D. Hefford 27 not out), with B. Roulston taking three for 9 and B. Bostock three for 22. Technical Old Boys scored 123 (N. Whiting 31, P. Nealon 25 not out)| with P. Hamel securing four for 28.
