' ASHBURTON CLUB

CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS i The.Ashburton Golf Club’s three championship finals were played yesterday. The course was fast' and t a strong wind in the afternoon made low scoring difficult. In the senior event J. Russell beat N. Nottle 7 and 5, in the intermediate A. Sutton beat K. Nicoll 1 up, and in the junior M. Hart beat H. W. Smallbbne 6 and 4. At the end of 18 holes Russell was 1 up on Nottle, Nicoll was 5 up on Sutton and Smallbone was 2 up on Hart. In the Ist 18 holes good golf was played by the seniors, Russell going out in 88 to Nottle’s 40 and returning in 40 to 41. Both players had lapses round the green. In the afternoon Nottle lost touch, particularly with his wood seconds. Russell’s long approaches were good and Nottle commenced forcing his shots. “ Scoring was poor in the intermediate morning round. Sutton commenced the second leg by winning the first two holes. Nicoll held a three up ad; vantage until the 12th, where Sutton squared the match. Sutton won the 13th, halved tl\e 17th, where Nicoll sank a 20-foot putt, and won tlia 18th to finish one up. It was an excellent l’ecovery by Sutton. Smallbone held the advantage during the whole of the morning round, but Hart played soundly in the afternoon to beat his steady and experienced opponent. Hart approached and putted very soundly.
