RUSSIA HAS ATOMIC WEAPONS
MR VYSHINSKY’S “BINDING” STATEMENT (Rec. 12.25.) NEW YORK, Oct. IS. . The Soviet Foreign Minister, MrAndrei Vyshinsky, replying .to a question at a press conference to-day, said: “The Soviet Union has atomic weapons, and has had them since 1947. When the former Foreign Minister, Mr Molotov, said there was no such thing as an atomic energy secret, the BBC and someone else said that was a bluff. That bluff happens to be a reality, as Russia has had it in her possession since 1947.” Mr Vyshinsky said the Soviet Union stood firm for the prohibition of the atomic bomb and international- control of atomic energy. “This is rather a binding .statement on the Soviet Government.”'’ ' Asked why the Soviet Government had not agreed to an investigation of industrial activity to determine what the various governments were doing about atomic, energy, Mr Vyshinsky referred to a documentissued on, June il, which, he said, made, it clear that the Soviet favoured international control and the inspection of atomic ; energy plants.
