SURPRISE BY MARYBURN At good double-figure odds, Maryburn won the Ashburton Handicap, principal race of the day. Dark Ai’row was a good second, with Broie finishing all over everything in third berth. When the field had settled down, Volomai was showing the way to Flying Control, Lovemorn and Maryburn, but, at the six furlongs, the last-named had taken charge and was li lengths clear of Flying Control, Foxella, Lovemorn, Yolomai, Nullah, Pandemonium, Peridot and Infatuate. Night Owl then made a forward move, but Maryburn was still the leader into the straight from Lovemorn, Flying Control, Night Owl, Peridot, and Dark Arrow. Dark Arrow finished in great style, but Maryburn hung on well to win by a neck from the top-weight, with Broie, not sighted until at the distance, half a length back third. Peridot, two lengths back, just shaded Infatuate.

Swayup’s Fourth On End

Bringing his record to four wins on end, three on the course, Swayup scored an effortless victory in the John Grigg Stakes and could have doubled the margin of three lengths which separated him from Beaumaris in second place. Air Travel was very slow at the barrier and the first to show out wfis Beaumaris, but he soon gave way to Swayup, with Valid third, then Waihora, Cloudy Range, Kamet and Western Winner. Robinfaye then made a forward move and followed Swayup round toward the straight entrance, with Beaumaris, Cloudy * Range and Western Winner next in order. Swayup led into the straight from Robinfaye, but Beaumaris then challenged, with Trinidad also showing up and Western Winner also coming into the picture. Swayup, however, finished brilliantly, and, never pushed, won from the liard-ridden Beaumaris by three lengths, with Trinidad the same distance away third, and Western Winner fourth a head back. Robinfaye was next and the others all well beaten.

Magical All The Way Only the placed horses in the Spring Handicap ever had any chance of winning, as the result of a very ragged start. Magical Avas on the move as the barrier rose, and many of the riders apparently thought there had been a false start, for Magical Avas three lengths clear of Newspaper, with Lexia tAvo lengths farther back, before the rest of the field set out in what proved a hopeless chase. Eulogize Avas the leader of the bunch over the middle stages, while Magnafonn came fast at the close. HoAvever Magical hung on

in the straight to Avin by a length from Lexia and NeAvspaper which deadheated for second, Avith Magnafonn a length back, Lady Christine a nose aAvay, and then Whitley, Trafalgar Day, Clyde Bridge and Crease. Final Race to Favourite Investors finished the day Avell, Avlien they made Joygiver an each-Avay favourite for the Rakaia Trot. The early leader Avas Master Mariner, from Kopara Lass, Sunshine Girl, Bonny Brogue, Supplement, Quindale, Jimmie Boy and Affectation, Avith Joygiver and Peggydale Avell back. Master Mariner led toward the straight entrance from Kopara Lass, Sunshine Girl, Jimmie Boy, Joygiver, Peggydale and Chance. In the run home Joygiver and Peggydale sorted themselves out, but the former finished very solidly to Avin by a length, Avith a gap of three to Chance, then tAvo lengths to Kopara Lass.
