LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 28, 1899). Presentation —A pleasant little ceremony took place “round the stone” at the “Guardian” office this morning, when Mr I. W. Tyrell-Baxter was presented by the staffs of the “Mail” and the “Guardian” with a handsome copy of Funk and Wagnall’s standard dictionary. The presentation was made in a neat practical speech by Mr H, Willis, manager of the Ashburton Publishing Company, in the name of the staffs, who congratulated Mr TyrellBaxter on the position he had secured on the literary staff of the Gore “Standard.” . Mr Tyrell-Baxter suitably replied. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the "Guardian,” Aug. 26, 1924). Representative Fixture —The Ashburton senior Rugby representative team defeated the South Canterbury representatives on Saturday by 20 points to 11. For the local side Dore (two tries), De Joux (one penalty), Gallagher (two tries), McDonald (a try) and McSherry (a conversion) scored the points, while D. Fairbrother (a penalty and a conversion), Craven (one try), and Ritchie (one try) scored for the visitors. The local side dominated play for a greater part of the game and the backs were speedier.
