ANNUAL REPORT OF COMMITTEE

The annual report of the Ashburton Trotting Club, for presentation at the annual meeting next Monday aftdYnoon, includes the following paragraphs :

“The club has again experienced a very successful year in every way. The summer meeting was held on .Boxing Day and the two day winter meeting on June 4 and 6. Fine weather prevailed, and these fixtures provided excellent racing and very large fields paraded in most events. The classic raece created wide public interest and attracted the best young pacere in commission. Stakes were maintained at a high level and the generous patronage by owners and the public indicates the popularity of the club’s meetings. Our thanks are due to owners, breeders and trainers for their generous support during the year. “The sum of £15,240 was distributed in stakes as against £14,415 last year. The totalisator turnover was £215,937, a record for the club. Taxes paid to the Government amounted to the large sum of £23,928 13s 9d, After making provision for income and social security taxes amounting to £2710 Is Id and allowing for depreciation the net profit for the year is £2547 lSe lid.

Improvements Planned

“Plans for the new stand have been completed and a further application for a permit to build is now being made to the Building Controller. The committee is hopful that a permit will be granted for at least the reconstruction of the stand destroyed by firs whilst in army occupation, if not for the whole scheme. Major improvements to the race track are under consideration, including irrigation. “Negotiations with Automatic Totalisators, Ltd., Sydney, have been proceeding in connection with a portable electric totalizator for a group of country clubs and we are awaiting the terms of the company’s contract. In conjunction with the Ashburton County Racing Club a section has been purchased opposite the racecause and a caretaker’s house is being erected. This will ensure more effective care and protection for the club’s property.” ACCEPTANCES
