R.D. SERVICES
District Improvement MEETING NEXT TUESDAY Aiming at improvement in rural mail services of the district, the Ashburton County Council yesterday afternoon decided to convene a meeting of those interested for 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday next. Cr. J. Davidson brought forward the proposal and stated that some areas were very badly served. Efforts had been made to secure improvement, but without success, and it seemed that the council should set a lead in the matter. It was suggested that a meeting be held next Tuesday, in the A. and P. Association rooms, and the Postmaster (Mr A. F. Wells) had stated that this time would suit him. There appeared no reason why country residents should not receive something like the same services as people in town, though, of course, they could not expect equal facilities. He moved that the meeting be held as stated, and that all interested be invited to attend.
This was seconded by Cr. S. P. Taylor. The County Engineer (Mr R. L. Lindsay) pointed out that where the council was most affected was that it was often stated that if such a road were metalled a mail service would be run on it. In some instances, however, no service was granted to roads already metalled. If the council could have an indication of where a mail service would be authorised, it would provide a guide as to its future metalling programme. The motion was then carried. Crs. Davidson. H. C. B. Withell and H. A. Mackenzie vvere appointed to represent the-council at the meeting.
