FIRST CONTEST
Ashburton Marching Association 22 TEAMS TO PARTICIPATE History will be made at the Domain Oval on Saturday when the Ashburton Marching Association will hold its first annual contest and sports meeting. Twenty-two teams, of seven girls each, will take part, Ashburton being represented by Kia Ora, iN'.Z. Farmers’, N.Z. Railways, and Star. Six teams from Timaru will compete, together with five from Temuka, four from Geraldine, and three Fairlie. A feature of the day will be a demonstration by Stafford (Timaru),, a 10-girl team, which is to compete at the North Island marching championships shortly. In addition, there will be a demonstration march by “combined offices” team. Proceedings will be opened by the march past and salute taken by the Mayor (Mr E..C. Bathurst), and the actual contest marching will be interspersed by various team games. At the Grand Parade of all competitors at the conclusion, the Mayoress (Mrs E. C. Bathurst) will present trophies as follows," Max Gilbert Cup (for highest aggregate points), G. Bowman Cup (for aggregate runners-up), Smallbone Bros. Cup (for marching), Todd's Drapery Ltd. Cup (for marching runners-up), Ashburton Marching Association Cup (for keep-fit games; open), Ashburton Marching Association Cup (for best turned-out team; open); and the Bathurst Rose Bowl (for best local team in marching). There will also be a “best leader” competition. Music will be supplied by the Ashburton Silver Band, and the Ashburton County Scottish Pipe Band. This will be the Pipe Band’s second to last public appearance before it departs for the Dominion contest at New Plymouth. On Sunday it will present a Drum-Major’s display.
