ASHBURTON CLUB

BOWLINE

L. PORTER WINS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP Playing a steady drawing game over the last eight heads, L. Porter won the singles championship of the Ashburton Club last evening, defeating A. P. Warriner 23-lb. The importance of the event, plus the fast pace of the green, beat both players in the early stages, but once they settled down they gave a good exhibition. Warriner was the first to find his length, and lie went to a 7-2 load over four heads. He showed a preference for full-length ends, on which Porter was frequently narrow. He won the jack on the fifth end, however, and shortened the head, scoring 2, .1, 2 on successive ends to take the lead. On the 9th end Warriner scored a brace by good drawing, and again put the jack near the ditch. This strategy again proved successful, for lie won four heads in a row to lead 15-8. It was at this stage that Porter really settled down, and he gave a fine exhibition of drawing to win the next eight ends. The lGth was the best of the match, both players being within IS inches of the jack. Porterlay four shots, and Warriner elected to drive, hut only succeeded in taking one shot out.. In subsequent ends he was frequently a fraction too heavy, twice narrowly missing a trail which would have given him threes. Porter collected another three on the 19th, which virtually gave him the match, which he clinched with a single on the 20th end. Cheers were given both players on their good exhibition.
