LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” March 1, 1899). Wakanui Road Board At the monthly meeting of the Wakanui Road Board, held on Saturday, there were present: —Messrs Stewart (chairman), H. A. Lloyd, D. Cochrane, W. H. Rule, and H. A. Ayrton. Mrs Maxwell, Dromore, wrote drawing to the board’s attention to a bad piece of road running past Mr Jas. Allen’s property and ed that it he put in order before the winter.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” March 1, 1924) Pace For Motor Lorries. —The Ashburton County Council on Saturday morning decided to bring about a bylaw restricting the speed of motor lorries, when travelling over all the county bridges to two miles an hour, and that they are to use the bridges on the same conditions as do the traction engines and haulers. The matter was introduced by the chairman, Mr W. T. Lill, who said the motor lorries, particularly the loaded ones, were doing great damage to the bridges, Ashburton bridge included. Some loaded with eight or nine tons, had been seen to cross at a speed of 8 to 10 miles an hour. Unless some restrictions were enforced there would be no bridges left.
