VISIT TO NELSON

MR EDEN SEES FRUIT AREAS (P.A.) NELSON, February 13. An inspection of the fruit, hop, and tobacco growing areas was made by Mr Anthony Eden during his short visit to Nelson on Saturday. A strong wind and thick weather over the Strait delayed the arrival of his plane for 45 minutes, but a large crowd assembled on Church Steps waited ,to give him an enthusiastic welcome at the civic reception. Mr Eden was accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. E. L. Cullen, and Mr K. J. Holyoake, Deputy-Leader of the Opposition. Replying to speeches of welcome by the Mayor (Mr J. A. Harjey), Mr Cullen and Mr E. R. Neale, M.P., Mr Eden said he would carry Nelson’s message of loyalty to their Majesties, and would deliver the Mayor’s invitation to Mr Churchill to spend a holiday at Nelson. As Mr Eden left the steps Nelson College boys performed a haka. The visitor showed keen interest and spoke to a number of boys. He returned to Wellington by plane late on Saturday afternoon.
