SPASTIC PARALYSIS

FIVE-YEAR PLAN FOR TREATMENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 7. The chairman of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society (Mr G. Hansard) said to-day that recommendations were being made to the Government to adopt a five-year plan to deal with the problem of cerebral' palsy. This is the result ,of a conference in Wellington of cerebral palsy experts, representatives of the Health Department, and members of the society, which recommended . the establishment of day schools in Christchurch and Wellington in 1949, a diagnostic training centre at Rotorua to accommodate between 25 and 30 cases to be established in 1949, a similar centre and residential school at Dunedin in 1951, /residential schools at Christchurch and Wellington in 1952-53, day schools in other parts of New Zealand at suitable locations, and the Wilson Home at Auckland to operate as at present. The society felt it should not be stampeded into any scheme until such time as there were equipment and trained staff available for long-term planning. The society had offered to subsidise the Government in the cost of sending a trained psychologist overseas to study cerebral palsy diagnosis.
