RUNAWAY TRAM ON FOOTPATH
BRAKES FAIL ON INCLINE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 7. A runaway tram '.snapped a power pole and came to rest on the footpath, with the front almost touching a block of flats, at the corner of Wallace Street and Jervois Road this morning. But for hitting the pole, the tram would probably have wrecked the flat, which is occupied by a family of three.
The tram was parked in Ponsonby Road while the motorman and conduc-
tor took a half-hour meal break. About 10.10 a.m. the tram’s brakes failed, and being on a slight incline it moved off into Jervois Road. A witness near the corner where the accident occurred saw the tram hurtling down the road, about 50 miles an hour. Tt reached the sharp turn into Walker Street, hurtled from the rails, smashed the pole, and stopped upright across the footpath. The left front corner of the tram was caved in, but only two windows were broken.
