HEAVY THUNDERSTORM
PAH I ATUA’S WORST FOR 30 YEARS
(P.A.) PAHIATUA, Jan. 7. The heaviest thunderstorm in 30 years hit Pahiatua shortly after 1.30 p.m. yesterday followed by thunderclaps that rocked buildings and stopped machinery in workshops. Torrential rain flooded the streets and threatened damage to' shops and homes. ’ y.
SURGES IN POWER SYSTEM (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 7. Widespread thunderstorms in the North Island yesterday afternoon caused a series of six surges iu the electric power system. These »were experienced between 1.30 p.m. and 5.34 p.m. and affected the 110,000-volt transmission lines between Bunnythorpe and Tuai, Woodville and Masterton, Bunnythorpe and Ongarue, and Napier and Woodville. The State Hydro-electric Department stated last night that they did not regard the surges as serious. The Weather Office reported light or moderate thunderstorms between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Wanganui, Manawatu, . Wairarapa, Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, and Gisborne districts.
